Cantina Manconi: Organic viticulture among the granites of Upper Gallura

In the heart of the deepest, most mountainous part of Gallura, at the foot of the Monte Limbara massif, lies the Manconi family winery. We are in Tempio Pausania, in a region characterized by harsh soils, cork oak forests, and a climate marked by significant temperature fluctuations. This agricultural reality interprets Sardinian viticulture through strictly organic management, cultivating vineyards located at approximately 500 meters above sea level. Far from the logic of industrial production and mass commercial circuits, Cantina Manconi focuses its energy on enhancing the historical grape varieties of the area, aiming to produce wines that are a clear and pure reflection of the granitic rock from which they draw nourishment and the specific climatic conditions of each vintage.

The terroir of Tempio Pausania: altitude and granitic disintegration

The character of Manconi wines is indelibly shaped by the geological characteristics of the Gallura soil. The rows are rooted in soils composed of disintegrated granitic sands, a draining and poor matrix that limits production per vine, concentrating extractive elements in the grape bunches. The altitude and the proximity of Monte Limbara guarantee a ventilated microclimate, where nighttime temperatures drop drastically even in the summer months. This constant temperature fluctuation is the key factor that preserves the acidic freshness of the grapes and the intensity of their aromatic profile. Work between the rows excludes intensive mechanization, relying on manual care and direct experience to ensure the integrity of the raw material until harvest.

The choice of organic: respect for the soil and stability in the cellar

The transition and maintenance of certified organic agriculture represent a precise commitment by the Manconi family to the environmental balance of Gallura. In the vineyards, the use of synthetic chemical herbicides and industrial fertilizers is excluded, preferring agronomic practices that stimulate the spontaneous vitality of the soil and the natural resistance of the plants. In the cellar, the transformation of the grapes follows technological standards aimed at minimal intervention. Fermentations and subsequent aging phases are managed to safeguard the varietal aromatic clarity, limiting invasive treatments and the addition of sulfites, in order to deliver a stable, digestible product closely linked to its origin in the bottle.

The winery's expressions: Vermentino di Gallura and Pitrinu

Production focuses on varieties capable of best enhancing the minerality of granite. Vermentino di Gallura DOCG interprets the high-altitude, mountainous version of the grape, presenting itself as taut, savory, and endowed with a vibrant freshness that deviates from the warmer versions of the coast. On the red wine front, Pitrinu (Rosso IGT Colli del Limbara Biologico) expresses the character of the territory through the union of traditional red grape varieties of Sardinia. It is a wine that renounces artificial softness to highlight a dry profile, notes of Mediterranean scrub, wild spices, and a lean tannic structure. Opening a bottle from Cantina Manconi means exploring the more rigorous and mountainous side of Sardinian viticulture, through clean, vertical, and unsophisticated glasses.
