Collection: Organic Nero d'Avola
Nero d'Avola is Sicily's most important indigenous grape variety, originating from the Avola area in the province of Siracusa, where it was already cultivated in Greek times. For centuries it was mainly used as a blending wine – its concentration and intense color were valuable for "correcting" paler wines from northern Italy and France. Only in the 1990s, with the qualitative revolution of Sicilian viticulture, did Nero d'Avola conquer the international scene as a varietal wine.
Fun Fact: The name "Avola" first appeared in official documents in 1696, but modern ampelographers believe that the grape variety was present on the island as early as the Phoenician era. Sicily is currently the Italian region with the largest certified organic vineyard area – over 30% of vineyards are cultivated without synthetic chemicals.
In its organic version, Nero d'Avola expresses the full power of the Sicilian territory: intense ruby red color with violet reflections, aromas of black cherry, plum, dark chocolate, and oriental spices. Ideal pairings: pasta alla norma, baked lamb, Ragusano DOP, grilled red meats.
