Collection: Organic Pecorino from Abruzzo
Pecorino is one of the Italian white grape varieties with the most romantic history: considered extinct for almost a century, it was rediscovered in the 1980s by Giulio Cesare Galasso, an Abruzzese winemaker who found some old abandoned vines on the slopes of the Maiella and decided to rescue them. From that rediscovery, one of the most extraordinary success stories in Italian wine was born: today, Pecorino is one of the most internationally acclaimed Italian white wines.
The name "Pecorino" has nothing to do with the cheese of the same name: it probably derives from the fact that sheep, during their autumn transhumance on the Apennine slopes, eagerly ate the grapes of this vine. A humble origin for a wine that is now served in the world's best restaurants.
Fun Fact: Pecorino is one of the few Italian grape varieties that obtained DOC status after having practically disappeared for decades. Its rediscovery triggered a domino effect: today, dozens of producers in Abruzzo and Marche cultivate it, and the vineyard area grows every year. A grape that seemed lost forever has become one of the symbols of the oenological renaissance of Central Italy.
In its organic version, Pecorino Abruzzo expresses the strength and freshness of the Apennines: brilliant straw-yellow color, aromas of citrus — lemon, grapefruit, cedar — white flowers, mountain herbs, and a chalky mineral note. On the palate, it is dry, savory, with lively acidity and a long, persistent finish. Pairings: Adriatic fish stew, spaghetti alle vongole (clams), fried seafood mix, young Pecorino cheeses, octopus carpaccio.
