Collection: Organic Verdeca Salento
Verdeca is one of Puglia's oldest indigenous white grape varieties, cultivated in the region since at least the 17th century and likely much earlier. Its name derives from the color of its berries—an intense green even at full ripeness—an unusual characteristic that helped make it recognizable among Apulian winemakers. For centuries, it was primarily grown in the Valle d'Itria and Salento as a blending grape, used to add freshness and acidity to local white wines.
Its rediscovery as a single varietal is relatively recent: only in the last twenty years have some enlightened producers begun to vinify it alone, discovering surprising aromatic potential and freshness for a southern grape variety. Verdeca challenges the prejudice that white wines from the South are necessarily heavy and alcoholic.
Curiosity: Verdeca is one of the traditional ingredients of Locorotondo DOC, one of Puglia's oldest white wines, produced in the Valle d'Itria among the trulli of Alberobello and Locorotondo. The Valle d'Itria, with its cool and ventilated microclimate, is considered the most suitable area for white wines in all of Puglia—a climatic anomaly in a region famous for powerful reds.
In its organic version, Verdeca Salento surprises with its Mediterranean freshness: straw yellow color with greenish reflections, aromas of citrus, green apple, almond blossoms, and a delicate herbaceous note. On the palate, it is dry, fresh, with lively acidity and a clean, mineral finish. Pairings: oysters, raw seafood, spaghetti with mussels, fried calamari, Apulian burrata with cherry tomatoes.
