Lagrein Alto Adige Biologico

Collection: Organic Lagrein Alto Adige

Lagrein is one of Alto Adige's oldest and most mysterious indigenous grape varieties, with roots dating back to the Alpine Middle Ages. The first documented mention dates to 1318, in a register from the Carthusian monastery of Allerengelberg near Bolzano, where it is cited as wine offered to the monks. For centuries it remained a niche grape, cultivated almost exclusively in the Bolzano basin and the Valle dell'Isarco, before being rediscovered in the 1980s by Alto Adige's most innovative producers.

The origin of the name "Lagrein" is uncertain: some theories link it to the Val Lagarina in Trentino, others to a pre-Roman Celtic term. Genetic analyses have shown that Lagrein is related to Trentino's Teroldego and, surprisingly, to French Syrah — a kinship that explains some of its most intriguing aromatic characteristics.

Curiosity: Lagrein produces two completely different wines from the same grape: Lagrein Dunkel (dark), a red with great structure and longevity, and Lagrein Kretzer, an intensely colored rosé with fruity aromas considered one of the best rosés in Italy. The same grape, vinified differently, yields opposite results — a rarity in the Italian wine scene.

In its organic version, Lagrein Alto Adige surprises with its depth: an almost black color with violet reflections, aromas of wild blueberry, blackberry, dark chocolate, violet, and a balsamic note typical of Alpine wines. On the palate, it is full-bodied and enveloping, with mature tannins and a freshness that balances its structure. Pairings: Alto Adige speck, cheese dumplings (canederli), game, baked pork shank, aged alpine cheeses.
