Friulano

Collection: Organic Friulano

Friulano is the emblematic white grape variety of Friuli Venezia Giulia, yet its identity has been at the center of one of the most heated enological controversies of recent decades. For almost a century, it was called Tocai Friulano — a name that evoked history, territory, and tradition — until 2007, when a ruling by the European Court of Justice imposed a change of name to avoid confusion with Hungarian Tokaj. This was a trauma for Friulian producers, who saw the name of a wine cultivated in the region since at least the 17th century erased.

The origins of Friulano are still debated: for years, it was believed to be related to Chilean Sauvignonasse, but recent genetic analyses have shown that it is a distinct variety, probably indigenous to Friuli or neighboring areas. What is certain is that in the marl and sandstone soils of Collio and Colli Orientali del Friuli, it finds its highest expression.

Curiosity: Friulano is one of the few Italian white wines that significantly improves with a few years in the bottle. The best versions, produced from old vines on ponca soils (alternating marl and sandstone), can evolve magnificently for 8-12 years, developing notes of almond, honey, and dried flowers.

In its organic version, Friulano expresses the mineral character of the territory: straw yellow color with golden reflections, aromas of fresh almond, white flowers, aromatic herbs, and a hint of toasted hazelnut. On the palate, it is dry, savory, with remarkable aromatic persistence and a slightly bitter finish typical of the grape variety. Pairings: San Daniele DOP ham, crispy frico, radicchio risotto from Treviso, Tagliamento trout, fresh mountain pasture cheeses.
