bottigilia di morellino di scansano

Collection: Organic Morellino di Scansano

Morellino di Scansano is the Sangiovese of the Tuscan Maremma, DOCG since 2007, produced in the Grosseto hinterland where viticulture coexists with the Mediterranean scrub, butteri (cowboys) and still wild nature. The name "Morellino" has uncertain origins: according to the most accredited theory, it derives from the dark color — "morello" — of the Sangiovese grapes grown in this area; according to others, from the dialectal term with which Maremma farmers called the dark horses used in the vineyards.

Curiosity: until the 1970s, Morellino was practically unknown outside Maremma. It was the work of a few pioneering producers — including Erik Banti and Fattoria Le Pupille — that transformed it into a wine of international renown. Today the appellation has over 100 producers and 1,200 hectares under vine.

In its organic version, Morellino di Scansano expresses the Mediterranean character of the territory: ripe cherry, Morello cherry, violet, with nuances of myrtle and rosemary. Present but never aggressive tannins, warm and persistent finish. Pairings: wild boar stew, Florentine steak, aged Tuscan pecorino cheese.
