2024

The Cannonau di Sardegna Rosé PDO Organic comes from Fattorie Isola, an organic farm in Sardinia. Cannonau is the island's emblematic grape variety — one of the oldest in the Mediterranean, probably introduced by the Phoenicians and cultivated in Sardinia for over three thousand years. It is the grape variety of Sardinian longevity: scientific studies have linked the moderate consumption of Cannonau — rich in polyphenols and resveratrol — to the extraordinary life expectancy of the inhabitants of Ogliastra, one of the five "Blue Zones" worldwide. Fattorie Isola interprets the Rosé version with a vinification that prioritizes freshness and immediacy without sacrificing the typical structure of the grape variety.

The vinification is precise and respectful: manual harvesting in crates, immediate cooling to +5°C for 72 hours before fermentation, cold maceration for 6-8 hours to extract color and aromas without aggressive tannins. The result is a dry, fresh, and structured rosé — with a personality that goes far beyond light Provençal rosés.

It has a pale pink color with violet reflections. The nose reveals raspberry, wild berries, and a delicate floral note. The palate is dry, with good acidity balanced by an enveloping softness and a persistent finish.

Recommended For

For those who love rosés with structure and personality, and want to discover what Cannonau — Sardinia's most important grape variety — can do in an organic rosé version. It is the right choice for those who find Provençal rosés too light and anonymous, and are looking for something with more character and terroir. Versatile: works from aperitif to dinner.

When to Drink

Immediately, well chilled, within 2 years of the vintage. It is a wine designed for immediate pleasure — freshness is its main strength. Ideal at 10–12°C. Also excellent slightly cooler in summer as an aperitif.

Taste Characteristics

A dry and structured Cannonau Rosé, where fruity freshness — raspberry, wild berries — is integrated with the typical softness of the grape variety and the minerality of the Sardinian terroir. Cold maceration for 6-8 hours extracts color and aromas without releasing tannins, keeping the wine fresh and drinkable. The finish is persistent and clean.

Why We Chose This Wine

Because Fattorie Isola's Cannonau Rosé tells the story of Sardinia in an unusual way — not the structured red one expects from Cannonau, but a fresh and immediate version that retains the character of the grape variety. The vinification with 72-hour cooling and cold maceration is a precise technical choice that respects the fruit. We offer it because it completes our Sardinian selection with a quality and terroir-driven rosé.

FAQ

What dishes does Cannonau Rosé Organic pair with?
Seafood and land appetizers, pasta with ragu, roasted game, medium-aged cheeses, Sardinian cured meats. Its structure also makes it suitable for more elaborate dishes compared to lighter rosés.

What is Cannonau? Is it the same as Grenache?
Cannonau is genetically identical to French Grenache and Spanish Garnacha, but Sardinia claims primogeniture: the oldest traces of the grape variety in Europe were found on the island. In Sardinia, it produces more structured wines rich in polyphenols than continental versions, thanks to the warm climate and granite soils.

Why are the grapes cooled for 72 hours?
Immediate cooling to +5°C for 72 hours prevents oxidation and preserves varietal aromas. The subsequent cold maceration of 6-8 hours extracts color and aromas from the skins without releasing tannins, ensuring a fresh and fragrant rosé.

Is it a certified organic wine?
Yes. Fattorie Isola is a certified organic farm in Sardinia. No synthetic pesticides are used in the vineyard.
