2023

The Lagrein Mühlanger comes from Brunnenhof, Kurt Rottensteiner's organic farm in Mazon, in the heart of South Tyrol. Lagrein is South Tyrol's most distinctive red grape variety — indigenous, cultivated almost exclusively in this province, with a personality unlike any other Italian red. Dark, tannic, with surprising freshness given its structure.

Vinification is traditional and respectful of the grape variety: the grapes ferment for two weeks on the skins in large 25 hectolitre oak barrels with subsequent malolactic fermentation. This is followed by a year of maturation in 500 and 700 litre oak barrels. The result is a Lagrein that has structure and complexity without losing the typical freshness of the grape variety.

The colour is dark ruby red with violet reflections. On the nose, blackberry, blueberry, dark chocolate and a spicy note. On the palate, it is tannic and savoury, with a freshness that balances the structure and a long, persistent finish.

Recommended for

For those who want to discover South Tyrol's most distinctive red — a grape variety almost non-existent outside this province, interpreted by Brunnenhof with artisanal precision. It is the right bottle for those who love structured and tannic reds but want something different from Barolo or Amarone: Lagrein has an alpine freshness that clearly distinguishes it.

When to drink

It is already enjoyable today, but it has all the characteristics to evolve magnificently over the next 4-6 years if stored correctly. The tannins soften with time, making the wine even more harmonious. Decant 30 minutes before serving.

Taste characteristics

A red of great structure and personality, where the significant tannicity is balanced by an alpine freshness that makes it drinkable despite its complexity. Blackberry, blueberry and dark chocolate dominate the fruit, with a spicy note that emerges with oxygenation. Long and persistent finish.

Why we chose this wine

Because Brunnenhof's Lagrein is an example of how South Tyrol's most distinctive grape variety can express itself to the fullest when grown organically and vinified with respect. Kurt Rottensteiner works on unique volcanic soils with a precision that is clearly felt in the glass. We offer it because it is consistent with our selection: organic, indigenous grape variety, recognizable terroir.
