Podere Casina's Morellino di Scansano DOCG BIO 2024 honestly portrays the Maremma Grossetana region: sunny, direct, with a freshness that Chianti reds lack. A blend of Sangiovese (85%) and Syrah (15%) grown organically since 1987 on sandy soils rich in galestro, hand-harvested in crates with staggered picking to preserve both acidity and phenolic ripeness. Cold maceration, spontaneous fermentation, aging in vitrified cement until March. No forced intervention—just the territory in the glass.
Bright ruby red in the glass. The nose offers ripe cherry, wild berries, fresh violet, and black pepper—a sunny and direct bouquet. On the palate, it is soft and full-bodied, with lively but perfectly integrated tannins. The freshness of Sangiovese cleanses the palate and invites another sip; Syrah adds spice and depth without overpowering the fruit. Persistent and harmonious finish.
Recommended for: Those who love Tuscan reds with character but without the demanding structure of Brunello—Morellino is the Maremma red, ready to open without waiting years. Perfect with Florentine steak, pici with ragu, pappardelle with hare, and wild boar stew. An unconventional pairing: with a board of aged Tuscan pecorino and chestnut honey, where the wine's freshness surprisingly balances the richness of the cheese. Serve at 16-18°C.
