2019

The Barolo Riserva Bricco Boschis Vigna San Giuseppe DOCG BIO is Cavallotto's highest expression: a wine born from a single historic vineyard, Vigna San Giuseppe, within the Bricco Boschis monopoly cru of Castiglione Falletto. It is not a Riserva in the commercial sense of the term — it is the selection of a precise plot, with a precise history, which Cavallotto has preserved for generations.

The family is among the pioneers of organic farming in Piedmont: already in the 1970s, they eliminated chemical herbicides when no one else did. In the cellar, the style is strictly traditional: indigenous yeasts, very long maceration with a semi-submerged cap (22-38 days), aging in large Slavonian oak barrels for 4-5 years, then one year in the bottle. No barriques, no accelerations. Only time.

The color is ruby red tending to garnet. The bouquet is intense and layered: violet, cooked plum, leather, baking spices, then lavender, incense, licorice, dried herbs. On the palate, it is broad and deep: morello cherry, cinnamon, nutmeg, mint, Earl Grey tea. Incisive but perfectly integrated tannins, vibrant acidity, a very long finish that continues to change in the glass as the wine opens.

Grape Variety: Nebbiolo 100% | Vintage: 2019 | Alcohol: 14.5% | Format: 0.75 l
Serving Temperature: 18°–20°C
Winemaking: Natural yeasts, semi-submerged cap maceration 22-38 days. 4-5 years in large Slavonian oak barrels, 1 year in bottle.

Recommended for

For those who already know Barolo and want to go further. Vigna San Giuseppe is a separate cru — not a commercial selection, but a precise plot with a precise history. It is the right bottle for those looking for a Barolo that can tell the story of a place, not just a grape variety. It is also the most important gift you can give to an Italian wine enthusiast.

When to drink

It is already enjoyable today, but it has all the characteristics to evolve magnificently over the years if stored correctly. With four years in barrel and one in bottle, it has already come a long way — but the best is yet to come. Think of it as an investment to uncork between 5 and 15 years. The 2019 vintage in the Langhe was exceptional.

Taste characteristics

A Barolo that impresses with its breadth even before its power. The tannic structure is imposing but never disjointed, the acidity keeps everything in tension. The finish is very long, with a persistence that continues to change in the glass as the wine opens. It is not a wine that you understand at the first sip — and this is precisely its merit.

Why we chose this wine

Because Cavallotto's Vigna San Giuseppe is one of the historic crus of Castiglione Falletto, and offering a single-vineyard Barolo Riserva means offering something that large industrial producers cannot replicate. Cavallotto has been working organically for decades, without compromising on quality and without chasing trends. We are in Diano d'Alba, a few kilometers from the winery: we collect the bottles directly, with guaranteed traceability and storage. This Riserva is their highest expression — and for us, it is proof that Nebbiolo, when respected, has no rivals.

FAQ

What dishes pair well with Barolo Riserva Vigna San Giuseppe?
Braised beef in Barolo, Florentine steak, game, black truffle. But even on its own, as a meditation wine, it is a complete experience.

Is it different from Barolo Bricco Boschis?
Yes, significantly. Same producer, same territory — but Vigna San Giuseppe is a separate cru, with a more complex profile and longer aging (4-5 years in barrel versus 3). It is the next step for those who have already appreciated Bricco Boschis.

How long can it age?
20-25 years in the best vintages. The 2019 vintage is considered exceptional in the Langhe — this is a wine for those with patience.

Is it really organic?
Yes, with official certification. Cavallotto has been practicing natural agriculture since 1970, eliminating chemical herbicides decades before organic became a trend.

Can I buy it as an important gift?
Absolutely. It is probably the most significant gift for an Italian wine enthusiast. A bottle that tells the story of a territory, a family, and a unique production philosophy.
