Podere Casina's Morellino di Scansano DOCG BIO 2024 honestly tells the story of the Grosseto Maremma: sunny, direct, with a freshness that Chianti reds lack. A blend of Sangiovese (85%) and Syrah (15%) organically grown since 1987 on sandy soils rich in galestro, hand-harvested in crates with staggered picking to preserve both acidity and phenolic ripeness. Cold maceration, spontaneous fermentation, aging in vitrified concrete until March. No forcing — just the territory in the glass.
In the glass, a brilliant ruby red. On the nose, ripe cherry, wild berries, fresh violet, and black pepper — a sunny and direct bouquet. On the palate, it is soft and full-bodied, with lively but perfectly integrated tannins. The freshness of Sangiovese cleanses the palate and invites the next sip; Syrah adds spice and depth without overshadowing the fruit. Persistent and harmonious finish.
Recommended for: For those who love Tuscan reds with character but without the demanding structure of Brunello — Morellino is the red of Maremma, ready to open without years of waiting. Perfect with Florentine steak, pici with ragu, pappardelle with hare, and wild boar stew. An unconventional pairing: with a board of aged Tuscan pecorino cheese and chestnut honey, where the wine's freshness surprisingly balances the richness of the cheese. Serve at 16-18°C.
