Review your cart →Malvasia IGT BIO Venezia Giulia comes from Simon di Brazzan, an organic farm in Cormons, in the heart of the Collio friulano. Malvasia Istriana is one of the oldest and most distinctive grape varieties in Friuli-Venezia Giulia — grown in this border region for centuries, with an unmistakable aromatic profile that sets it apart from all other Italian Malvasias. Simon di Brazzan interprets it using a hybrid winemaking method that enhances its complexity without sacrificing freshness.
The winemaking is meticulous and multifaceted: manual selection, gentle destemming, cooling of the must, two days of pre-fermentation in the press, gentle vacuum pressing, and free flotation to clarify the must. Most of it ferments in steel at 18°C. Another part ferments in a tank with the skins for the entire fermentation, then ages in barrel. Everything remains on the lees until the end of February. The result is a Malvasia of great complexity and depth.
On the nose, white flowers, peach, apricot, and a bitter note typical of Malvasia Istriana. On the palate, it is enveloping and savory, with a surprising structure and a long, persistent finish with hints of bitter almond.

Recommended for
For those who want to discover Malvasia Istriana in its most complex and territorial form — not the sweet or aromatic Malvasia of Southern Italy, but the dry, structured white of the Collio friulano. It is the right bottle for those who love whites with personality and want something different from the usual Pinot Grigio or Sauvignon.
When to drink it
It is already enjoyable today, but it has all the characteristics to evolve beautifully over the next 3–5 years if stored correctly. The macerated component and time spent on the lees give it sufficient structure for aging.
Taste characteristics
A structured and complex Malvasia, in which the aromatic richness of the grape variety — white flowers, peach, apricot — blends with the minerality of the Collio and the depth of the macerated component. The bitter finish is the signature of Malvasia Istriana — not a flaw, but the distinctive mark of the grape variety in this region.
Why we chose this wine
Because Malvasia Istriana is one of the most distinctive grape varieties of Friuli-Venezia Giulia, and Simon di Brazzan interprets it with an artisanal seriousness that is clearly evident in the glass. The hybrid winemaking method — part in steel, part with skin maceration and barrel aging — is a precise choice that adds complexity without losing the variety's identity. We recommend it because it tells the story of Friuli with honesty.
FAQ
What dishes does Malvasia IGT BIO Venezia Giulia pair well with?
Baked or grilled fish, fish risottos, semi-aged cheeses, and seafood appetizers. Its structure also makes it suitable for more elaborate dishes such as sea bass in a crust or gratiné crustaceans.
What is Malvasia Istriana? Is it the same as other Malvasias?
No. Malvasia Istriana is an indigenous grape variety of Friuli-Venezia Giulia and Istria, completely different from the Malvasias of Southern Italy. It produces dry, structured, and savory wines with a characteristic bitter finish. It has nothing to do with sweet or aromatic Malvasias.
Why is part of the wine macerated with the skins?
Macerating part of the must for the entire fermentation extracts aromatic complexity, structure, and savoriness that fermentation in steel alone would not provide. Subsequent barrel aging adds roundness. The final blend balances freshness and depth.
Is it a certified organic wine?
Yes. Simon di Brazzan is a certified organic farm in the Collio friulano. No synthetic pesticides are used in the vineyard, and indigenous yeasts are used in the winery.
