2023
The Chardonnay Mühlanger comes from Brunnenhof, an organic farm owned by Kurt Rottensteiner in Mazon, in the heart of South Tyrol. It's a family-run business on porphyry volcanic soils at an altitude of 400–500 meters, where the Mitterberg water table creates unique conditions for structured white wines. Organic by conviction, not just for market certification.
The winemaking is precise and unconventional: ripe grapes are harvested at the end of September, macerated for 24 hours in the press, then gently pressed. The must ferments in 500-liter oak barrels and matures for another 10 months on the lees. Bottled in August. The result is a Chardonnay of great structure and complexity, far from fresh and immediate whites — a wine for both dining and contemplation.
On the nose, ripe fruit, butter, toasted notes, and a volcanic minerality that emerges with aeration. Full-bodied and enveloping on the palate, with a freshness that balances the richness of the wood and lees. Long and persistent finish.

Recommended For
For those who love structured and complex Chardonnays — not a fresh white for aperitifs, but a table wine that stands up to substantial dishes and evolves in the glass throughout the evening. This is the right bottle for those who want to discover what Chardonnay can do on the volcanic soils of South Tyrol, far from Burgundian or Californian models.
When to Drink It
It's already enjoyable today, but it has all the characteristics to evolve magnificently over the next 3-5 years if stored correctly. The structure and acidity support its evolution in the bottle. Decanting it 20 minutes before serving enhances its aromatic complexity.
Flavor Characteristics
A rich and enveloping Chardonnay, where aging in oak and on lees integrates perfectly with the volcanic minerality of the terroir. It is not a simple wine — it changes in the glass and requires attention. The finish is long, persistent, with a freshness that is surprising given its structure.
Why We Chose This Wine
Because Brunnenhof is one of the most serious organic farms in South Tyrol, and their Chardonnay Mühlanger is an example of artisanal winemaking that makes no compromises. Kurt Rottensteiner works on unique volcanic soils with a precision that is clearly evident in the glass. We propose it because it is consistent with our selection: organic, identifiable terroir, authentic complexity.
FAQ
What dishes pair well with Chardonnay Mühlanger?
Creamy risottos, baked fish, white meats in sauce, aged hard cheeses. It also holds up to dishes with white truffle thanks to its structure.
Why is the alcohol content so high (14.5%)?
The volcanic soils of Mazon and the late harvest at the end of September yield very ripe and sugary grapes. The complete fermentation in oak transforms all the sugar into alcohol, with no residual sugar. It is a dry and structured wine, not heavy.
Is it a certified organic wine?
Yes. Brunnenhof is a certified organic farm in South Tyrol. Kurt Rottensteiner works without synthetic pesticides on porphyry volcanic soils.
Should it be decanted?
Yes, 15–20 minutes of decanting or simply pouring it into the glass in advance helps to open up the aromas and smooth out the wood structure. Do not serve it too cold — 10–12°C is the minimum.
